Woman Accuses Alabama Senate Candidate Roy Moore of Sexual Harassment
Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore struck back at what he called “the Obama-Clinton machine’s liberal media lapdogs” after a news article printed a woman’s claims that the former judge had initiated a sexual encounter with her when she was 14.
“The forces of evil will lie, cheat, steal—and even inflict physical harm—if they believe it will silence and shut up Christian conservatives,” Moore said on his Twitter account Thursday.
The Washington Post’s story with Leigh Corfman, now 53, says that Moore, then an assistant district attorney, approached her in 1979 outside an Alabama courtroom where she was sitting with her mother.
Corfman said another time Moore, then 32, took her to his home in the woods and kissed her. In another visit, Corfman said he undressed her and touched her over her undergarments and also guided her hand to his underwear.
Corfman said they did not have sex, and she asked Moore to take her home.
“I wanted it over with – I wanted out,” she told the Post.
Opponents of Moore are calling for him to drop out of the race before the Dec. 12 election against Democrat Doug Jones, but Moore said that he would not because the report is “baseless.”
“Our nation is at a crossroads right now— both spiritually and politically. Our children and grandchildren’s futures are on the line. So rest assured—I will NEVER GIVE UP the fight,” he said on his Twitter page.
Meanwhile, Alabama’s Republican governor, Kay Ivey called the allegations “distrurbing.”
“I will hold judgment until we know the facts,” she said. “The people of Alabama deserve to know the truth and make their own decisions.”
