A Minority of Americans—Mostly Christians– Believe Gender is Determined at Birth

A majority of Christians believe that a person’s gender is determined at birth, while the majority of religious “nones” disagree, reports The Washington Examiner.

This information was gathered from a poll conducted by the Pew Research Center. The data collected from the poll shows a huge divide in opinion between Christians and others on the issue of gender and transgenderism.

According to the poll, 63 percent of Christians “say that whether someone is a man or a woman is determined by their sex at birth,” while 62 percent of religious “nones”–those who have no particular religious affiliation–say “a person’s gender is not necessarily determined by the sex they are assigned at birth.”

Although a majority of Christians from all denominations affirmed that one’s gender is determined at birth, the denominations that most strongly affirmed this were white evangelicals (84 percent) and Black Protestants (59 percent).

Conversely, only 37 percent of religiously unaffiliated survey participants said one’s gender is determined at birth, while 29 percent of atheists/agnostics affirmed the same.

Another aspect of the poll looked at how different groups viewed transgenderism in culture. Thirty-nine percent of Christians said society had gone too far in accepting transgender people, while 65 percent of atheists/agnostics said society had not gone far enough.
