Amtrak train derails on highway bridge in Washington state
An Amtrak train has derailed on a bridge in the US state of Washington. Emergency services are at the scene.
“We are aware of an incident involving Amtrak train 501,” the rail operator wrote on Twitter. “We will update with additional details as they become available.”
The train derailed in Dupont, Pierce County, and arrived from Tacoma.
The derailment occurred during morning rush hour, and resulted in highway lanes being blocked, according to the Washington Department of Transportation. Drivers have been advised to avoid the area.
First responders are treating the derailment as a “mass casualty incident,” according to local news outlet KIRO 7.
