Oprah’s Golden Globes Speech Sparks Rumors of Presidential Run
Oprah made a big splash at the Golden Globes last night. Her speech upon receiving the Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement was highly praised, and many even encouraged her to run for president.
The famed talk show host, actress, producer, and humanitarian especially spoke about the #MeToo movement and said, “I want all the girls watching here and now to know that a new day is on the horizon!”
With her usual charisma, Oprah had the crowd gathered at the Beverly Hilton on its feet cheering.
“In my career, what I’ve always tried my best to do, whether on television or through film, is to say something about how men and women really behave. To say how we experience shame, how we love and how we rage, how we fail, how we retreat, persevere and how we overcome,” she continued.
“So I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon! And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘Me too’ again,” she concluded.
Oprah has long been an extremely influential cultural figure, but will her influence extend to politics?
Rumors have circulated for several years about a possible presidential run, but the possibility seems even more probable in these politically surprising times in which we live.
Ironically, back in 1999 President Trump was even in favor of an Oprah presidential bid:
“Well, I would consider, and as Chris [Matthews] can tell you, I threw out the name of a friend of mine, who I think the world of. She’s great. And some people thought it was an incredible idea, some people didn’t, but — Oprah. I said, ‘Oprah Winfrey,’ who’s really great. And I think we would be a very formidable team,” said Trump at the time, according to The Washington Post.
Would Oprah run against President Trump in 2020, or would their friendship prevent that? It’s certainly an interesting question which remains to be seen.
