Homosexual Actor/Singer Ricky Martin: ‘I Want to Normalize’ Same-Sex, Open Relationships
In a recent interview with the website Vulture, actor and singer Ricky Martin said that he wants to “normalize” same-sex and open relationships, remarking that he believes that it is “good for the world.”
Martin was talking about his role in the sensual and sin-saturated FX television series “American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” as he plays Antonio D’Amico, the homosexual partner of Gianni Versace.
“I want to normalize relationships like this. It’s good for the world; it’s good for me as a gay man with kids,” he told the outlet. “It’s important that we shed some light on power couples like this, even though he was quiet and behind the scenes and he was just there supporting his man for 15 years.”
Martin himself came out as a homosexual in 2010, writing on his website, “I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.” He also appeared on the Oprah Winfrey later that year show to discuss the issue, stating that he decided to announce his homosexuality because he didn’t want to teach his children “how to lie.” Martin is the father of twin boys through a surrogate mother.
He announced earlier this year that he had “wed” painter Jwan Yosef.
In the American Crime Story series, Martin, known for his secular hit “Livin’ la Vida Loca” (“Living the Crazy Life”), portrays D’Amico being questioned by the FBI and having to admit that male escorts were being brought in to the relationship. D’Amico and Versace were stated to have had an “open” relationship where they could have physical relations with other men.
“It was a very excruciating scene for me,” Martin explained to Vulture. “I mean, this guy was opening every door that was a secret from Gianni’s and Antonio’s relationship. I’m talking about bringing men into our lives. I’m talking about bringing escorts.”
“But before that interrogation, it’s still confusing, even now, if you have a boyfriend that brings escorts to you for you to have intimacy with. But that is the reality for many men and women, and I cannot say only in the gay world. There are many relationships that are open,” he also stated later in the interview.
Nonetheless, despite his discomfort with the scene, Martin remarked that he felt that the story needed to be told to the world so that viewers could see the “level of security … and trust” between the two men, remarking that he wanted to “normalize” a type of lifestyle for open relationships.
“We want to normalize another kind of reality for open relationships. And that’s what we’re doing,” he said. “There’s absolutely nothing wrong. We’re just two very self-secure men that are completely in love with each other, that trust each other to the maximum level, and here we are.”
The Versace family and D’Amico have stated to various outlets that some of the aspects of the drama are inaccurate.
According to reports, Martin was raised Roman Catholic, but now identifies as open to, and has dabbled with, other religions.
As previously reported, Christians believe, that homosexuality—like any inclination that is contrary to the law of God—is a part of the Adamic sin nature that must be regenerated by the second birth, as Jesus outlined in John 3:5-7, “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.”
2 Corinthians 5:14-17 also reads, “For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead. And that He died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto Him which died for them, and rose again. … Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
Jesus also outlined in Matthew 19:4-5, “Have ye not read that He which made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and they twain shall be one flesh?’” Every Scripture referencing couples also refers to a husband and his wife.
