Hungarians go to polls in 2018 parliamentary elections

Voting got underway in Hungary on Sunday to elect a 199-seat parliament in the 2018 general elections, which could see the incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orban win his third consecutive term. Orban’s right-wing Fidesz party and its ally the Christian Democrats are projected to win a majority, AP reports. The prime minister’s campaign has been centered around anti-immigration policies. His main competitors are Gergely Karacsony, a candidate for the Socialist and Dialogue parties; and Gabor Vona of the far-right nationalist Jobbik party. Some 8.3 million citizens are eligible to vote, and preliminary results are expected on Sunday night.
