19 Russian women receive life sentences in Iraq for joining Islamic State – media
An Iraqi criminal court sentenced 19 Russian women to life imprisonment for joining Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) on Sunday, Iraqi Al Sumaria TV reported. The women were convicted of “joining and supporting IS,”according to an AFP journalist present at the hearing. In mid-April, two Russian women were also found guilty of joining the terrorist group among seven foreigners. Up to 70 women, who allegedly hold Russian passports, have been remanded in custody in Iraq, according to Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.
