May Brings National Foster Care Month

(Mission Network News) May is National Foster Care Month, which is “a time to recognize that we each can play a part in enhancing the lives of children and youth in foster care,” the Children’s Bureau says.

While National Foster Care Month focuses on the foster children in America, millions of children worldwide are in need of foster care. Further, the number of vulnerable children continues to rise due to the opium crisis in the United States, and the global refugee crisis that has separated families or left children orphaned.

“We’ve never seen such a global refugee crisis. It’s greater than World War II. We have never seen so many refugees and because of that, there are children without parents,” Bethany Christian Services’ President Chris Palusky says. “So, the need to find foster care for children has just grown tremendously.”

Palusky shares there are around 400,000 children in need of foster care in the United States. In other nations, there are tens of thousands in a single refugee camp.
