62 dead in Guatemala’s Fuego volcano eruption

Guatemala’s Volcan de Fuego has now claimed at least 62 lives, according to officials, after it erupted on Sunday, showering nearby areas with fiery rock and mountains of ash. At least 1.7 million people have been affected by the volcano’s sudden violent activity, with more than 3,200 people forced to flee their homes. A massive rescue and cleanup mission is underway, involving both the military and Guatemalan police forces. The country is currently in a state of emergency after what was the biggest eruption at the 3,700 meter (12,300 ft) stratovolcano since the 1970s.
