‘America’s Got Talent’ Singer’s Goal: Inspire Others ‘To Stand Up For Jesus Christ’
A 20-year-old student from a Christian college wowed the judges on NBC’s America’s Got Talent Tuesday night … and also survived a few awkward questions about dating and kissing.
Joseph O’Brien, a student at Boyce College in Louisville, Ky., played the keyboard while singing a rendition of “Hello” by Lionel Richie. O’Brien originally is from Columbia, Tenn.
When done, O’Brien received a standing ovation from the crowd.
“There’s so much potential of where you could go with your vocals … and I absolutely adore you,” judge Mel B. told him.
Another judge, Howie Mandel, said he sensed O’Brien was nervous but believed he could go far in the show.
All four judges voted “yes” on his act, meaning he advanced to the next round.
“I absolutely loved it,” judge Heidi Klum said.
O’Brien’s Facebook page says: “My goal is to write music that is centered around Scripture and inspires a generation to stand up for Jesus Christ!” His father, Michael O’Brien, is a former member of the group NewSong.
Denny Burk, professor of biblical studies at Boyce College, said he, too, was impressed. O’Brien is one of his students. Boyce is a school of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention.
“I thought Joseph’s performance was fantastic,” Burk told ChristianHeadlines. “He is a rare talent. His poise and good humor in the face of awkward questions from the judges was impressive. I couldn’t be more proud.”
When O’Brien took the stage, Klum asked him if anyone came to the audition with him.
“I’m by myself today,” he said.
“Did you leave someone at home? Do you have a girlfriend, a wife or …?”
“No, I don’t have a girlfriend,” he responded. “I’ve actually been single my entire life. … I’ve actually never gone on a legit date or anything like that.”
“Really? But you’re a handsome fellow. How is that possible?”
“I guess the right opportunity hasn’t come along,” he said.
With the other judges cringing at her questions, she asked, “Have you ever kissed anyone?”
“No, I have not,” he said.
Surprised, she said, “Joseph, take it away and good luck.”
