‘The Mbappe era is upon us’: Youthful France serve notice to football world with Russia success

France’s second World Cup win could be the beginning of an unprecedented era of success for Didier Deschamps young side, according to social media.

Kylian Mbappe became the first teenager to score a goal in World Cup Final since then 17-year-old Pele scored twice in the 1958 final against Sweden as France’s young side swept aside a gritty Croatia side in Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, leading to some influential figures on social media pointing out that this could be the first step of what could be a decade of dominance for French football.

Youth permeates Deschamps’ side, with just five players of the 23 being over the age of 30 (two of them being goalkeepers). Fifteen members of the squad are 25 or below, meaning that they won’t yet have celebrated their 30th birthday by the time the next World Cup rolls around.

Mbappe was awarded the honor of being the best young player at Russia 2018, while a teary-eyed Luka Modric was the deserved recipient of the Golden Ball for the tournament’s best player, something of a silver-lining to go with the Real Madrid playmaker’s silver medal.
