Indonesian police fatally shoot 11 suspects, given license to kill in lead up to Asian Games
Police in Indonesia have shot at 52 suspected petty criminals resisting arrest and killed 11 of them in the lead up to next month’s Asian Games. As part of a police crackdown on criminal behavior, 2,000 people have been arrested. A total of 320 people have been shot as a warning to others, with police making no apology for taking “firm measures” against criminals in Jakarta. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have condemned Jakarta police for their heavy-handed approach to fighting crime.
