The Russians have agreed to remove Iranian forces and their proxies 100 kilometers from the border with Israel, a senior diplomatic official said Monday evening after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov.

Israel’s stated position remains, however, the removal of all Iranian forces and their proxies from Syria, although Netanyahu made clear in his talks in Moscow two weeks ago that the priority was to move these forces away from the border, and to remove from all of Syria long range missiles that have ability to go beyond that 100 kilometer buffer.

The Israeli official characterized the meeting with Lavrov and Gerasimov at this time as “significant.”

“Now when the Syrian Army is returning to the border, it is important for us to ensure that Iran and Hezbollah do not return as well,” he said.

Netanyahu was joined in the meeting by Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman and Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Gadi Eizenkot, who spread out maps for the Russian visitors and showed intelligence information about where the Iranians are continuing to entrench themselves in Syria.

Netanyahu, according to the official, said that Israel reserves the right to act beyond the 100 kilometer buffer against long range Iranian missiles. The official said that Netanyahu also said that Syria must close its border with Lebanon, to prevent the transfer of weapons there, and to seal the border as well with Iraq to prevent pro-Iranian militias, and weaponry, from coming into Syria through Iraq.
