Father Sentenced After Rubbing Hot Sauce, Cayenne Pepper in Infant Daughter’s Eyes, Devising Ways to Torture Child
MOORHEAD, Minn. — A Minnesota father has been sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison after allegedly rubbing hot sauce and cayenne pepper in his infant daughter’s mouth, nose and eyes, and tormenting her in other ways, because he was tired of her crying and knew that she was too young to tell anyone what he was doing to her.
Shawn Foltz, 42, was sentenced on Wednesday to 30 months behind bars after pleading guilty in June to third-degree felony assault of a victim under the age of four. He must serve at least 20 months under the plea agreement and will be eligible for supervised release for the final 10.
According to reports, Foltz is accused of abusing his two month old daughter in various ways, sitting at work and devising different schemes to torture her out of his frustration with her crying.
He allegedly told police that he put hot sauce or cayenne pepper in her mouth, nose and eyes, snapped a towel at her face, threw a small firework at her head, hit her bottom with a wooden spoon, dunked her in hot and cold water, and held her mouth shut while pinching her nose to block her airway.
The abuse took place over a month and a half, Foltz said.
The situation came to a breaking point in May 2017 when Foltz sent his wife a text message that included a photograph of the baby, whose eyes were swollen and she was foaming at the mouth.
He claimed that the matter was not as bad as it looked, but the mother called for an ambulance, and the child was transported to the hospital. Police were called to the scene for suspected child abuse.
According to Valley News Live, Foltz said that the baby was being fussy while trying to feed her, and as he couldn’t get the bib on her, he pressed down on her chest with his fingers, leaving red marks. He stated that the bottle of milk also spilled onto the towel, so in his frustration, he snapped the baby in the face with it repeatedly.
Foltz’ wife has since filed for divorce, and told the court this past week, “I felt like I did not know the man I was married to.” Their now four-year-old son, who witnessed some of the abuse, also sees a therapist for emotional harm. Foltz allegedly falsely blamed some of the abuse on the boy.
The little girl is now safe and sound, and healthy.

2 Timothy 3 warns that in the last days, “men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God…”
Jesus also taught in Mark 7 that evil comes from within the heart of man, and is why men must be regenerated by the Spirit of God.
“For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness—all these evil things come from within and defile the man,” He declared.
