Paraguay will move its embassy in Israel back to Tel Aviv, reversing a May decision by former President Horacio Cartes to move the diplomatic site to Jerusalem, the South American country’s foreign minister told reporters on Wednesday.

“Paraguay wants to contribute to an intensification of regional diplomatic efforts to achieve a broad, fair and lasting peace in the Middle East,” Foreign Minister Luis Alberto Castiglioni said.

In an immediate response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the Foreign Ministry to announce it is closing Israel’s embassy in Paraguay and recalling its ambassador “for consultations”

“Israel views Paraguay’s decision very severely,” read the Prime Minister’s Office statement Wednesday evening. “[The decision] shall harm the relations between our countries.Cartes had traveled to Israel to inaugurate the new embassy in May. His successor Mario Abdo, also a member of the conservative Colorado party, took office last month.

Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded with a statement saying they had a part in the move, and that Palestinian foreign minister pushed the new Paraguay president to reverse the embassy move to Jerusalem.

MK Yair Lapid condemned Paraguay’s decision in a reaction on Twitter. “We have no other, and will have no other capital than united Jerusalem,” wrote Lapid.
