Pittsburgh synagogue terror attack victims identified
The names of the 11 victims from Saturday’s mass shooting at Congregation Tree of Life in Pittsburgh are announced at a press conference on Sunday.
The victims were identified as Joyce Fienberg, 75; Richard Gottfried, 65; Rose Mallinger, 97; Jerry Rabinowitz, 66; Cecil Rosenthal, 59; David Rosenthal, 54; Bernice Simon, 84; Sylvan Simon, 86; Daniel Stein, 71; Melvin Wax, 88; and Irving Younger, 69.
FBI Special Agent in charge Robert Jones said at the press briefing that all of the victims have now been taken from the synagogue to the medical examiner’s office.
US Attorney Scott Brady said in Pittsburgh at a press briefing on Sunday morning, “The fact that this attack took place over a place of worship is even more heinous.”
“We stand together as a community,” Brady added, “a community that rejects hate and violence.”
Brady asked the public and community for patience, “for there are things we cannot share during investigations.”
“We are treating this as a hate crime, charging it as such. There is no indication he was working with anyone else. ” he concluded.
“Let this horrific episode be another step on the march of humanity in recognizing that we are all one,” said Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduta.
The FBI, city and state officials in Pittsburgh will hold a news conference and are expected to share the names of those shot dead on Saturday after the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the United States.
Dan Stein, 71, was the first victim to be named on Sunday morning.
Family members told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review on Saturday that Stein will be remembered as a kind soul willing to lend a hand.
Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto told CBS television station KDKA that the list of the dead it “will rip your heart out,” saying he personally knew some of the victims.
The shooter, Robert Bowers, 46 entered the Squirrel Hill neighborhood synagogue during Saturday morning services, shouted antisemetic slurs and opened fire on congregants, killing 11, including two police officers, and injuring six people.
The attack is the most deadly antisemitic attack in American history.
