Maj. Gen. Moshe (Chico) Edri selected as next police commissioner
Interior Security Minister Gilad Erdan recommended the appointment of retired Maj. Gen. Moshe (Chico) Edri as the next police commissioner on Friday afternoon.
The appointment will be submitted for approval on Friday by the Advisory Committee for the Appointment of Senior Officials, headed by retired judge Eliezer Goldberg.
MK Erdan chatted with two other candidates that had been up for the position, Maj. Gen. Yoram Halevi and Maj. Gen. David Bitan, and thanked them for their respectable efforts.
The decision process for the role of police commissioner has been occurring for the past two months, which included consultations with senior police and security officials of past and present, including Police Commissioner Roni Alsheikh.
Erdan stated that “Edri has impressive and proven command capabilities, along with many years of experience in a wide variety of positions in the Israel Police.”
“All of these make him the most suitable candidate.”
Moshe (Chico) Edri, married with three children, has a Bachelor’s degree from Bar Ilan University in Israeli Studies and a Master’s degree from Tel Aviv University in Middle Eastern Studies.
Aged 51, Edri has served in the Israel Police since 1990. After being released from the IDF as Deputy Commander of the Golani Commando. After being drafted to the Israel Police, he served in several positions, such as commander of the Taybeh station, commander of the Kfar Saba station, commander of the Yarkon area, commander of the Etgar unit, head of the traffic department, security secretary and head of the operational bureau of the interior security minister, commander of the Jerusalem district and commander of the Tel Aviv district.
In the past year, he has served as the director general at the interior security ministry.
“Edri presented me with impressive plans to deal with the central police challenges in accordance with my policy,” said Erdan.
While in Bulgaria for Balkan Craiova summit, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Edri “is a worthy choice. Edri is a good and experienced officer.”
Leader of the Kulanu party and Minister of Communications Moshe Kachlon wrote on Twitter that he congratulates Edri “his expected appointment to police commissioner.”
