WASHINGTON — A production of Fiddler on the Roof, a hit American musical about antisemitism in Russia in the 1900s, was interrupted on Thursday night by an antisemitic outburst that sent the theater into a panic.

The play performance at the Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore had just completed its first act when a man stood on the balcony and began shouting, “Heil Hitler, Heil Trump,” according to video and witnesses.

Baltimore law enforcement were called and escorted the man, yet to be identified, out of the building. He was not arrested.

But the antisemitic act caused fear in the hall, mere weeks after a shooting targeting Jews at a synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, took 11 lives. Theater goers ran from the theater and reported concern that the individual was about to open fire.

The FBI reported last week that reports of hate crimes against Jews have increased by 37% in a single year, compelling the Justice Department to issue a statement that it is “particularly troubled” by the spike.

The Anti-Defamation League, a private non-profit organization, reported similar findings in its annual audit of antisemitic incidents. Their records found an increase of 57% over the previous year, tracking the political rise of Donald Trump to the presidency and through his first year in office.
