Singer Robin Thicke Experiences Spiritual Awakening Following Father’s Death and Girlfriend’s Miscarriage

Pop singer Robin Thicke has experienced somewhat of a spiritual awakening following his father’s abrupt passing in 2016 and his girlfriend’s miscarriage, which she made public earlier in 2018.

Thicke released a new single, “Testify,” last week, and it hits a few spiritual notes — a 180 degree turn from the endlessly sexual, made-for-radio pop tunes for which he’s known.

Alan Thicke, father to the 41-year-old singer, suddenly collapsed while playing a game of ice hockey with his youngest, son, Carter, at Pickwick Gardens in Burbank 2 years ago in December 2016. The 69-year-old was best known for his role as Dr. Jason Seaver in the popular 1980s sitcom “Growing Pains.”

After being rushed to the hospital, Alan Thicke died of a heart attack.

In August, Thicke’s 24-year old girlfriend, model April Love Geary, opened up about her experience suffering a miscarriage before the birth of the pair’s daughter, Mia Love. Thicke and Geary are currently expecting their second child.

“It’s cathartic just to be able to say it and then let it live, as opposed to in the middle of a conversation or a quote,” Thicke mentioned to People. “Once you put it into song form, then it can live forever. And so the message in the song is really about the hope and the light at the end of that tunnel when you feel that you lost or you feel that you don’t know what to do next.”

He continued, “You know, that reconnection to God or spirituality or something deeper than the surface is what brings you back home to who you really are and who you want to be.”

Although there is not a lot known about Thicke’s personal faith and beliefs, his famous father took his “Growing Pains” co-star Kirk Cameron under his wing several years ago, when the now 48-year-old star made the decision to convert to Christianity.

After he converted, Cameron stated that he started to feel uncomfortable when he was pushed to film scenes that were suggestive or failed to line up with his beliefs in some way. Thicke provided the words of encouragement that Cameron needed and suggested that the young star take a step back from secular entertainment and instead seek opportunities based in Christian faith.

“What I said was, very sincerely, ‘If you’re seriously disturbed by a show like ‘Growing Pains’ being blue, then I think you’re not going to find a gentler vehicle on network TV for your beliefs, and what you should do is take the wonderful fan base which you have, and take your fan base to Christian broadcasting where you don’t have to fight with the people you disagree with,’” Alan Thicke revealed to Fox News back in 2012. “And all these years later I think that’s exactly what he’s done.”

Although the younger Thicke’s new song and remarks about God are quite broad and seem more connected with a general spirituality, the Father takes the pain and brokenness we feel on this earth and uses it as opportunities to meet us, in order to provide us with flickers of grace and mercy and a world that is dark and, in many times, hopeless.

We are truly excited to see where this spiritual excursion takes Thicke, and it is our prayer that he approaches this new time in his life with an open heart and mind.
