Famed Israeli author Amos Oz passes away at 79
Amos Oz, famed Israeli author, perennial Nobel Prize contender and winner of the Israel Prize for Literature, passed away from cancer on Friday at the age of 79.
His daughter, Professor Fania Oz-Salzberger, one of his three children, announced Oz’s death in a post on social media.
“My beloved father passed away from cancer,” Oz-Salzberger wrote, “after a rapid decline. He was passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by loved ones.”
The author of 40 books, Oz was one of the most recognizable Israeli voices worldwide. His short stories and novels served as models for generations of Hebrew authors, and through the translation of his works into dozens of languages, Oz also left a deep impression on writers around the world. He was the recipient of dozens of international prizes and honors, including the Franz Kafka Prize, the Primo Levi Prize, and the French Legion of Honor.
He was also an unrelenting advocate for peace between Israelis and Palestinians and, for many Israelis, a voice of conscience and moral courage.
Last month, Oz’s latest work, Dear Zealots: Letters from a Divided Land, was published in translation in the United States. The book, comprised of three short essays, puts forth the author’s passionate argument in favor of a two-state solution and his hopes for a better future.
Oz was shortlisted for the International Man Booker Prize in 2017 alongside fellow Israeli novelist David Grossman. On winning, Grossman paid tribute to Oz, saying: “Amos is my friend and my teacher, and it’s very meaningful to be on the same list as him… today there are so many wonderful wonderful writers in Israel that deserve to be translated and to be read.”
