President Trump to Examine Steel Border Barriers, Repeats Threat to Declare National Emergency
Remarks come as the partial government shutdown enters its third week with no resolution in sight
President Trump on Sunday reiterated his call to build a southern U.S. border wall out of steel instead of concrete and repeated his threat to declare a national emergency if Congress doesn’t approve the funds.
His remarks came as the partial government shutdown entered its third week with no resolution in sight. Negotiations between the White House and congressional staff were expected to continue on Sunday.
“The barrier or the wall can be of steel instead of concrete if that works better,” Mr. Trump told reporters as he left the White House for meetings at Camp David. He added that he planned to “call the head of United States Steel and a couple of other steel companies to have them come up with a plate or a design.”
The issue of a wall along the southern border is at the center of the spending battle that triggered the shutdown days before Christmas. Mr. Trump has said the border wall, one of his primary campaign pledges in 2016, is necessary for national security. Democratic congressional leaders firmly oppose a wall but do support money to increase security along the border.
