It will be interesting and important to watch his progress, especially if he dies.

In February 2017, I warned that martyrdom for nationalist politics will be important to watch because there is a historical precedent for this in Germany.

So far, there have been no serious candidates for this martyr, although certainly there were potential ones in the US given the rise of the nationalist movement. While the same potential still exists in the US, this will be of greater significance in Europe as it is there that the movements that will shape the world will come from.

I do not wish his death or that of others. What I warn is that if he does die, it could have greater implications for the nationalist movement in Germany. Horst Wessel was a popular figure in the Nazi party but a comparatively unknown figure outside of it, yet it was his death that propelled him to public knowledge and memory and which was used for extensive propaganda purposes.

It is another reason why in this time, one must be very careful about imparting status to any public figure. Consider the recent incident with US Senator Lindsey Graham, who was heavily lauded for his stance supporting Trump nominee Brett Kavanaugh. The fact that Graham’s entire political past was ignored, along with his highly questionable behaviors and views, simply because he supported a certain position that was considered expedient at the time. He went from being known and relatively ignored to instant fame.

This is the danger with such individuals promoted by political movements, as they will be immortalized for a particular cause while the rest of their life is ignored. Such was what happened with Horst Wessel, for the man was not a good person, but he was made into one for “the cause.”

Even if he is not turned into a “martyr,” the potential for such a martyr still exists and will become more likely as the fighting between the different political factions intensifies and eventually gives way to a more open conflict. It will be something to watch for in the years to come and to keep track of, as it will be another sign marking the road to conflict.
