Senate Leaders Push Votes on Dueling Bills to End Shutdown

Senate leaders on Tuesday set up a pair of votes on dueling measures aimed at ending the partial government shutdown, as the standoff between President Trump and Democratic lawmakers stretched into its second month.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) announced an agreement to bring up the two bills quickly on Thursday, bypassing many of the chamber’s lengthy procedures.

Each bill seeks to apply political pressure to members of the opposite political party. Each would need 60 votes to clear procedural hurdles. Aides from both parties were skeptical either measure would be able to do so, although there is likely to be more suspense around the Democratic bill.

The bill advanced by the GOP maps out Mr. Trump’s weekend proposal, which combines $5.7 billion to build steel barriers along the border with Mexico, temporary protections for some immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and other changes to the immigration system, while reopening the rest of the government.

The other bill, offered by Senate Democrats and which passed the House last week, would reopen the government through Feb. 8.
