Following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s historic visit to Chad last week and the formal re-establishment of diplomatic ties, the two countries began cooperating in the United Nations this week.

Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon met Chad’s ambassador to the world body, Ali Alifei Moustapha, last week as part of the renewal of ties.

Danon’s office said this was the first time the ambassadors from the two countries met, and that they discussed ways in which Israel could help Chad in various fields, including water and agriculture. Danon also discussed with his Chadian counterpart opening a direct line of communication regarding votes on Israel in the UN.

Following Chad President Idriss Deby’s visit to Israel in November, Chad – which had reflexively always voted against Israel in the UN – did not vote on the December resolution in the UN General Assembly to condemn Hamas, marking a significant change in Chad’s voting patterns even before formal ties were established last week.

That vote failed to muster the two-thirds majority needed to pass, although 87 countries supported it, and only 57 opposed, with 33 abstentions and 16, like Chad, not voting.

Danon also invited Moustapha to join a delegation of UN ambassadors that he will be leading in Israel next month.
