Black Panther Star Letitia Wright Delivers Impassioned Acceptance Speech about Faith
As Black Panther star Letitia Wright accepted her British Academy Film Awards award Sunday night, she boldly declared that she is first and foremost a “child of God.”
According to CBN News, Wright, who has been open about her struggle with depression, accepted the “Rising Star” BAFTA award with a smile on her face as she thanked God for making her dreams of becoming an actress come true.
Wright started her speech saying, “I identify myself as a child of God and I can’t get up here without thanking God.”
The Marvel star continued, “A few years ago, I saw myself in a deep state of depression and I literally wanted to quit acting. The only thing that pulled me out of it was God, my belief, my faith and my family, and an email from BAFTA asking me to become part of the BAFTA Breakthrough Brits.”
“I was like, ‘Let me try again,’” she added.
Before Black Panther, Wright had limited success in films. Between 2011 and 2018, the actress had booked four films and landed limited appearances on a handful of TV shows.
The actress noted in her speech that her path to success was not a simple one.
She said, “This wasn’t a click of a finger success and it’s still a work in progress; I’m still a work in progress.”
The outspoken Christian actress ended her speech by thanking God one more time and encouraging others who are going through a difficult time to have faith.
She said, “I want to thank God, my family, my team. I want to thank everybody who said yes to me, that gave me a chance, and just saw my talent and saw what God placed in me.”
Wright then charged, “I want to encourage young people. You don’t have to be young, you can be any age, but I want to encourage you – anyone going through a hard time, God made you and you’re important.”
“There might be some of you here who might be going through a hard time. I just want to encourage you and God loves you. Just let your light shine,” she concluded.
Wright first achieved film success in 2018 for her role of Shuri in the blockbuster hit Black Panther. Two months later Wright reprised her role as Shuri in the 2018 Avengers film – Avengers: Infinity War. The new Avengers film – Avengers: Endgame – is set for release in 2019 where Wright will again reprise her role as Shuri.
