DUBAI – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif stepped down on Monday, announcing his resignation on Instagram.

“I am apologizing to you for all the shortcomings … in the past years during my time as foreign minister … I thank the Iranian nation and officials,” he wrote on his Instagram page jzarif_ir.

Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency said “some sources have confirmed Zarif’s resignation”, but it was not clear whether President Hassan Rouhani would accept it.

The Iranian Foreign Minister is a frequent critic of Israel and is often singled out for criticism by Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Sources assesed that Ali Larijani, currently the speaker of the parliament, will replace Zarif as foreign minister.

The US State Department said that it was “closely monitoring reports of the resignation of Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif.”

“We do not have further comment at this time,” the State Department added.
