Nine million Iranians still suffer from illiteracy
About nine million people in Iran suffer from absolute illiteracy, according to a report by the Majlis Research Center, the research branch of the Iranian Parliament.
Iran has a population of 82 million people. The country still struggles with high illiteracy rates in spite of the implementation of three strategic plans for promoting literacy.
According to statistics compiled by international organizations, the number of people who lack the ability to read and write is even higher.
The World Bank assesses that there are about 11.6 million illiterate Iranians.
Moreover, UNESCO’s reports show that about 2% of under 24-year-old population are suffering from absolute illiteracy.
