Christian Author and Speaker Rachel Held Evans Placed in Medically Induced Coma

Progressive Christian speaker and author Rachel Held Evans has been placed in a medically induced coma.

According to a post on Evans’ blog written by her husband Daniel Evans, the Search for Sunday author was placed in a medically induced coma on Friday after she began to experience seizures as a result of an infection.

Daniel Evans wrote, “During treatment for an infection Rachel began exhibiting unexpected symptoms. Doctors found that her brain was experiencing constant seizures. She is currently in the ICU. She is in a medically induced coma while the doctors work to determine the cause and solution.”

On April 14, Evans took to Twitter to ask her followers to pray for her noting that she had both the flu and a UTI and was suffering from a severe allergic reaction to the antibiotics doctors had prescribed her. Evans’ Tweet seemed optimistic, however, as she went on to joke that she might miss popular TV show Game of Thrones.

Seemingly, Evans’ symptoms only got worse leading to her being placed in a medically induced coma.

The announcement of Evans’ hospitalization shocked many in the faith community prompting people to reach out on social media with prayers.

Relevant Magazine reports that Science Mike of the Liturgists podcast tweeted, “I can think of few people who are such examples of what I imagine a healthy Christian would look like as @rachelheldevans. So, I’ve been on my knees in intercessory prayer that I’m not sure I believe in this morning. #PrayForRHE

Chrisitan author Sarah Bessey wrote, “Hi, friends. Yes, @rachelheldevans is in the hospital and it has been a difficult few days. Please do respect her family’s privacy and please simply pray. Our hearts are heavy and we are so sad. We will update when it’s appropriate.”

Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission President Russel Moore called on all people regardless of theological standpoints to pray for Evans. Moore wrote on Twitter, “@rachelheldevans and I are, as you know, theological opposites, and we’ve debated each other on all kinds of stuff over the years. She needs our prayers right now. Conservatives, progressives, centrists, everybody: let’s pray for RHE.”

At the time of this writing, there is no further update on Evans’ condition. Updates on her condition will be posted to her blog.
