Pompeo tells Congress no more waivers regarding Jerusalem Embassy Act
United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday wrote on Twitter that he told Congress that the goals of the Jerusalem Embassy Act had been fulfilled and that therefore no more waivers would be necessary.
US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman published the entire statement on his own Twitter account, which said that not only was the American embassy moved to Jerusalem on May 14, 2018, but an Ambassador’s Residence had been opened in Jerusalem as well, fulfilling all the requirements of the act.
Proud to report to Congress that we have achieved the goals of the #Jerusalem Embassy Act by opening not just @usembassyjlm offices in Jerusalem, but also an Ambassador’s residence in Jerusalem. No more waivers. Another great step for the U.S.-#Israel partnership!

Pompeo wrote that “Twenty-three years ago Congress overwhelmingly voted in support of moving the US embassy to Jerusalem. Successive administrations refused to move the embassy and instead exercised Presidential waivers to avoid the Act;s restrictions.”
President Trump in December 2017 recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and in May 2018 followed through on his campaign promise to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
No more waivers! Having now opened a Chief of Mission Residence in Jerusalem, the Administration has fully achieved the mandate of the Jerusalem Embassy Act. Eternal thanks to @POTUS and @SecPompeo for their courage and leadership. pic.twitter.com/BaMUfqOQQH
