Israeli Navy responds to incident with Turkish vessel
Israeli Navy ships dealt with a fire aboard a foreign merchant ship near Haifa’s port on Sunday after attempts were made to damage the vessel.
According to the IDF’s Spokesperson’s Unit, the navy had received a report overnight from a foreign cargo vessel anchored off of the coast of Haifa that was reported to have been set on fire by “unknown elements.”
The event was monitored and handled by the Israel Navy, operating in cooperation with the Israel Police in the area, in coordination with the ship.
“The incident is under control,” the IDF said in a statement.
The ship, MSC Canberra, had sailed from the Turkish port of Mersin under a Panamanian flag on Friday and was on its way to enter Haifa port before making its way to the southern Israeli port of Ashdod.
Satellite imagery showed that it had been anchored off of Haifa port since Saturday afternoon.
According to some reports, two unidentified stowaways were discovered on board. The crew reported this to Haifa port and locked themselves in the bridge until the navy arrived.
The two stowaways then proceeded to set fire to parts of the ship.
While further details of the incident were barred from publication, it is believed to be criminal.
Israel is highly dependent on the sea with over 90% of Israel’s imports arriving via the sea and while the country’s navy is relatively small compared to other IDF corps, it has a significant amount of territory to protect since the expansion of the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) from 40 miles to 150 miles from shore years ago.
The navy is also tasked with securing the natural gas drilling rigs that are in Israel’s EEZ and shipping lanes, clear targets for enemies on Israel’s northern border. The IDF believes that Hezbollah has long-range missiles which can hit the rigs, which supply a large amount of the electricity consumed in Israel.
