LAKEWOOD, CO—During services at Lifecrosspointe Community Church this weekend, churchgoers watched a brief video providing a report of its youth group’s recent mission trip to West Virginia.
The team from the suburban Denver church supposedly partnered with an Appalachian church to do outreach events and general repairs to the church building. The content of the video, however, had very little to show regarding these intended purposes.
A large portion of the production was footage from youth leader Luke Duncan’s GoPro recorded at a high ropes course near the church, and a boating and water skiing outing was also featured in the video. At no point in the presentation did anyone in the congregation witness any actual work or ministry being done by the students on the trip.
“This is what missions can look like sometimes,” Duncan said when questioned about the video. “It may have seemed like fun and games, but there was some serious team building going on. We even witnessed to the zip line instructor. I mean, not verbally, but with our actions.”
When asked directly if they did any work on their trip, high schooler Samantha Grey said, “Absolutely! Do you know how hard it is to get one of those climbing harnesses on?”
The pastor of the West Virginia church reported that another mission team is scheduled to complete the planned repairs, but he suspects he’ll just do them on his own.
