Disney’s ‘Andi Mack’ Series Finale Depicts Teens Cyrus and TJ as Homosexuals
The Disney Channel’s final season of its popular show for tweens, “Andi Mack,” depicts two boys realizing their feelings for each other and holding hands.
Cyrus Goodman, played by Joshua Rush, had announced in an episode earlier this year, “I’m gay.” In 2017, the show’s creators also depicted Cyrus as revealing to his friend Buffy, played by Sofia Wylie, that he is “jealous” that Andi and Jonah are in a relationship as he likes Jonah too, and that he feels “weird” and “different” about his realization.
In the series finale, which aired on July 26, Cyrus and T.J., played by Luke Mullen, are among the youth who sing out Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” at a party.
Later, as the two boys sit together on a bench, T.J. reveals to Cyrus what his initials stand for. Cyrus enthusiastically exclaims that he thinks it is a “great name,” and the two smile at each other.
“Is there anything else you want to know?” T.J. asks as he stares at Cyrus and slowly begins to reach for his hand.
Cyrus looks down at T.J.’s hand moving toward his and replies, “Yes. Is there anything you want to tell me?”
T.J. inquires the same, and the two boys smile at each other and join hands. Soft music plays in the background to add to the scene.
According to CNN, “Andi Mack” creator Terri Minsky touted her inclusion of homosexuality in the tweenagers storyline, stating, “We were its first serialized show, its first series centered around an Asian American family, and its first to feature an LGBTQ character who spoke the words ‘I’m gay.’”
“Andi Mack’s” breakthroughs will likely appear relatively modest. Yet as the show’s history makes clear, an image-conscious company like Disney tends to tread cautiously, one step at a time,” she remarked. “In that regard, the ending — and the program’s success — can also be viewed as something of a beginning, or as the catchy theme song put it, ‘Tomorrow starts today.’”
Actor Luke Mullen, who played T.J., also tweeted, “Honored to be a part of such a groundbreaking show. I hope my character can inspire people to proud of who they are and love who they love.”
Other Disney broadcasts have included homosexual portrayals, including in 2017, when an episode of the preschooler-geared cartoon “Doc McStuffins” featured an animated depiction of the lesbian mothers of two children.
Disney also aired its first-ever same-sex kissing scene during its cartoon “Star vs. the Forces of Evil,” and a fleeting clip of two mothers leaving their son for school was also subtly included in the new Toy Story 4 movie.
As previously reported, while the common theme among those who experience same-sex physical attraction is that they were “born this way,” the Bible teaches that all men are in the exact same predicament: All are born with the Adamic sin nature and have various inherent inclinations and feelings that are contrary to the law and will of God, and are unable to change by themselves (Job 14:4).
It is why Jesus came: to “save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21, Luke 19:10 and 1 Timothy 1:15).
Jesus outlined in John 3:5-7 that men must be regenerated by the second birth, and have their very nature transformed from being in Adam to being in Christ, or they cannot see the kingdom of Heaven.
“Jesus answered and said unto him, ‘Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.’ Nicodemus saith unto him, ‘How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?’
Jesus answered, ‘Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, ‘Ye must be born again.’”
Ezekiel 36:26 also speaks of the doctrine of regeneration, as the Lord says, “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you. And I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.”
The late author A.W. Pink similarly explained, “Man chooses that which is according to his nature, and therefore, before he will ever choose or prefer that which is divine or spiritual, a new nature must be imparted to him. In other words, he must be born again.”
