Teacher Issues ‘Gender Unicorn’ Handout to Students on First Day of School to Explain Why He Goes By ‘Mx’
DENAIR, Calif. — Some parents have expressed objection after a middle school teacher in California issued a “gender unicorn” handout to students on the first day of school to explain why he goes by the prefix “Mx.” rather than “Mr.”
Luis Davila Alvarado teaches science at Denair Middle School. Last week, he gave students a worksheet that features an image of a unicorn along with sections such as “gender identity,” gender expression” “sexually attracted to” and “emotionally attracted to.” The document comes from Trans Student Educational Resources.
Superintendent Terry Metzger told The Modesto Bee that Alvarado provided the paper to help students understand why he prefers to be referred to as “Mx.” over “Mr.” — the former being a gender neutral term pronounced as “Mix.”
“He gave a handout discussing gender in first and second periods. It was not an assignment and students were not required or asked to fill it out,” Metzger stated.
However, Alvarado did not obtain prior permission to distribute the handout, and when Principal Amanda Silva saw the content of document as she visited his classroom during second period, she told him to discontinue distribution. Approximately 50 students had received the printout at that point.
“The principal and I have spoken with the teacher about why we believe this was a poor decision,” Metzger said.
Some parents, grandparents and others have since expressed their objection over the gender unicorn handout.
“I’ve talked to a lot of parents and a lot of grandparents and I know a lot of them have called the school and complained about it,” grandmother Tammy Stout told Fox40 News.
“I don’t care what you identify as, that’s your decision. But no one has the right to ask my child these questions that have absolutely nothing to do with what you are teaching in a classroom,” stepparent Sonia Rush posted to Facebook, referring to the nature of the printout, which had the appearance of needing to be completed.
Metzger similarly told Fox40 that the document was the “wrong tool” as it was “not appropriate just in the way that the handout looked, and it looked like it needed to be filled out.”
As previously reported, while some view transgenderism as a medical condition, Christians believe the matter is a spiritual issue — one that stems from the same predicament all men everywhere face without Christ.
The Bible teaches that all are born with the Adamic sin nature, having various inherent feelings and inclinations that are contrary to the law of God, and being utterly incapable of changing by themselves.
Jesus outlined in John 3:5-7 that men must be regenerated by the second birth, and be transformed from being in Adam to being a new creation in Christ, or they cannot see the kingdom of Heaven. This quickening from spiritual death to spiritual life is known in Christianity as the doctrine of regeneration.
Ephesians 2:1-7 states, “And you hath He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins, wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience — among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.”
“But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ (by grace ye are saved) and hath raised us up together and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.”
