Over 100 Secular Musicians Join Planned Parenthood’s ‘Band Together’ Campaign Opposing Abortion Bans

WASHINGTON — More than 100 secular musicians — a number of whom are on the playlists of young teenage girls — have signed on to a “Band Together” campaign launched by the abortion and contraception giant Planned Parenthood. The effort opposes state laws that outlaw abortion and claims that such bans take away women’s rights to “control their own body.”

“Musicians across the country are standing in solidarity with Planned Parenthood,” the organization writes on its campaign page. “They’re saying access to sexual and reproductive health care is about the same type of freedom that allows them to create music and speak their truth — because no one is free unless they control their own body.”

“Right now, sweeping bans on safe, legal abortion are stripping away our freedoms,” it states. “Our bodies are our own — if they are not, we cannot be truly free or equal. Across the country, some politicians are trying to make decisions about our bodies for us. We won’t let the abortion bans sweeping the country put our lives and futures at risk, and we won’t be silenced while our fundamental right to control our bodies is taken away.”

The page also features the names of dozens of musicians who back the effort, including Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Ariana Grande, Norah Jones, Selena Gomez, John Legend, Sarah McLachlan, Demi Lovato, Meghan Trainor, Fiona Apple, the Foo Fighters, Alanis Morissette and Third Eye Blind.

The full list may be read here.

The names additionally appeared in a full-page ad that ran in the Aug. 24 edition of Billboard magazine.

According to the outlet, Ariana Grande donated $250,000 in concert proceeds to Planned Parenthood in June, and rapper Travis Scott plans on donating proceeds from recent merchandise sales to the abortion chain.

Katy Perry, whose parents are evangelical ministers and attend Jentezen Franklin’s Free Chapel in California, donated $10,000 to Planned Parenthood in 2016 out of concern that the organization could be federally defunded.

Rihanna tweeted a photograph in May of the lawmakers who had passed a bill banning abortion in Alabama, writing, “[T]hese are the idiots making decisions for women in America” and expressing “shame” on Gov. Kay Ivey for signing the legislation.

In June, nearly 200 U.S. companies signed on to a similar advertisement that ran in the New York Times, which asserted that banning abortion is harmful to the economy because it keeps women out of the workforce.

“Restricting access to comprehensive reproductive care, including abortion, threatens the health, independence and economic stability of our employees and customers,” it read. “Simply put, it goes against our values and is bad for business. It impairs our ability to build diverse and inclusive workforce pipelines, recruit top talent across the states, and protect the well-being of all the people who keep our businesses thriving day in and out.”

Signees listed on the campaign website include Yelp, Ben & Jerry’s, GoFundMe, Birchbox, Lush Cosmetics, Keds, UserTesting, Lesbians Who Tech, hims & hers, Slack Technologies, Zendesk, POPSUGAR, Refinery29, Atlantic Records & Warner Music Group, and Kabbage.

However, in his article “The Calling of the Young Women to Marry and to Bear Children,” Den Hartog notes that the feminist mindset is far from the biblical exhortation in 1 Timothy 5:14 that young women are to “marry, bear children [and] guide the house.”

“[T]he role of mother in the home is greatly despised in our society. The career woman is glamorized. She is the liberated woman. She is the one who has insisted on her rights which, according to the spirit of our age, all women must by all means do. She has made a name for herself in the world,” he wrote.

“On the other hand, [according to the world,] the mother who stays home to give birth to and raise a family is an ignoramus. She is counted as a nothing. Her life is boring. She is wasting her time. She has submitted herself to some form of evil bondage that hopefully our world is now finally ridding itself of,” Hartog lamented.

He said that women who selflessly give of themselves to invest their lives in their children, to lovingly train them in the ways of the Lord, should be encouraged and applauded.

“With all these ideas bombarding the Christian woman today, she needs to know very clearly what her calling is before the Lord. She needs to be encouraged in our day. The godly woman who stays home to bear children and to sacrifice herself to raise them in the fear and admonition of the Lord needs to be praised,” Hartog outlined. “She needs to be told over and over of the great honor of her position and the great significance of her calling in the Church. ‘Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.’”
