Senate vote to block wall funding shift falls short of veto override power
The Senate voted Wednesday to block President Trump from shifting federal money to the construction of a southern border wall.
The 54-41 vote signaled bipartisan disapproval of Trump’s decision to move funding from military construction projects, but the numbers fall far short of stopping the inevitable presidential veto.
11 Republicans voted with Democrats to pass the resolution, which was introduced by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Two-thirds of the Senate and House are needed to override Trump’s forthcoming veto.
Democrats and some Republicans opposed Trump’s decision earlier this year to shift $3.6 billion from Pentagon projects to the construction of the border wall. Trump moved the money after declaring a national emergency he said was needed to respond to a historic surge of illegal immigrants entering along the southern border.
Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin said the president’s decision to shift funding hurts the effort to make critical repairs at military bases, including Joint Base Andrews, in his district.
