‘For God So Loved the World’: Judge Gives Amber Guyger a Bible After Botham Jean Murder Trial
The judge in the murder trial of Amber Guyger, the former Dallas police officer sentenced to 10 years for fatally shooting her neighbor, caused a stir Wednesday when she gave Guyger a Bible and told her to start reading in John 3:16 and pointed her to the gospels.
‘This is where you start,” Judge Tammy Kemp stated after giving her the Bible. “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…” she continued.
Guyger, a four-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department, had been fired and charged with manslaughter after she shot and killed 26-year-old Botham Jean upon entering his apartment on Sept. 6, 2018, claiming that she thought it was her apartment. She was indicted on a murder charge two months later.
After giving her Bible, Judge Kemp hugged Guyger.
The judge’s publicly expressed care and concern for Guyger’s soul has resulted in a complaint by the anti-Christian Freedom of Religion Foundation to the State Commission on Judicial Conduct.
“If anyone complained, I would do everything I could to support the appropriateness of it. I can’t tell you I’ve done the same exact thing, but I have spoken to defendants, have I given them a hug, perhaps. Not given a bible, that’s not me, but I don’t think there’s anything inappropriate about what she did, and I would support that, if anyone tried to file a complaint, I would do my best to intercede and protect her,” Dallas County District Attorney John Cruezot told CBS 11 when asked if Judge Kemp’s gesture violated any policies or protocol.
As previously reported, Botham Jean’s brother forgave and embraced Guyger, telling her to “give your life to Christ,” which brought tears to the eyes of Judge Kemp who would later carry out this act toward the convicted murderer.
