Former Rep. Trey Gowdy Joins Trump’s Legal Team

President Trump has hired former Rep. Trey Gowdy to represent him as his personal legal team grows in preparation for House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry.

Jay Sekulow, a lawyer for Mr. Trump, announced the move Wednesday evening. “I have known Trey for years and worked with him when he served in Congress. His legal skills and his advocacy will serve the President well,” Mr. Sekulow said.

The decision to hire Mr. Gowdy marks the first effort by the president to bolster his legal team’s ranks since House Democrats last month opened an impeachment inquiry into whether Mr. Trump abused the power of his office by pressing foreign leaders to investigate his political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden. Mr. Trump has denied wrongdoing.

Mr. Gowdy, a Republican and former prosecutor from South Carolina, retired from his House seat in January, saying his skills were better suited to a courtroom than to Congress.

He didn’t respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.

The former congressman first rose to national prominence as the chairman of the Select Committee on Benghazi, a special panel created to investigate the death of four Americans in a 2012 terrorist attack in Libya.

The panel and its chairman were routinely accused by Democrats of using taxpayer money to finance a political crusade to damage Hillary Clinton. Mrs. Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, was secretary of state when the attacks occurred and was widely expected to run for president when the panel was created in 2014.
