This year, March for Life is celebrating the 100th anniversary of a woman’s right to vote and responding to a pro-choice belief that abortion supports women with their theme: “Life Empowers: Pro-Life is Pro-Woman.”
“Ending the life of an innocent human being is promoted as an essential to women’s freedom, to women’s empowerment, and to women’s progress. To that we say, ‘No,’” said March for Life Jeanne Mancini, according to the Washington Examiner.
At a press conference for the annual march, March for Life also celebrated the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment allowing women the right to vote and highlighted suffragists such as Susan B. Anthony and Alice Paul.
“What most people don’t understand is that the first wave feminists were, without known exception, all pro-life,” said Serrin Foster of Feminists for Life to CBN News. “They believed in the rights of slaves to be free, the right of women to vote, and they believed in the right of women and children to be protected from abortion.”
Foster continued to express that abortion shows that women’s needs have yet to be met.
“Abortion betrays the basic feminist principles of non-violence, non-discrimination, and justice for all,” she said.
Chairperson for Black Catholics and March for Life panelist Gloria Purvis believes abortion does not help the poor, particularly poor African Americans.
“It is not empowering or freeing for us to have to kill our children in the name of equality and freedom,” she said. “Freedom built on the crushed skulls of our children is not freedom—that’s oppression. And we are monsters if that’s our way of climbing to the top.”
Joining the others at the rally will be Republican Rep. Ann Wagner of Missouri who authored the Born Alive Infant Child Protection Act. The act requires babies born alive after a failed abortion should “receive the same medical care as premature babies.” It would also force those on the Affordable Care Act to pay separately from their premiums for abortions.
The march will take place on January 24, 2020, in Washington, D.C.
