South Korea-Affiliated Churches in China Investigated, Pastors Arrested

(Bitter Winter) In July, the government of a town under the jurisdiction of Huadian city in the northeastern province of Jilin sent out orders to administrations of each village under its authority to investigate and ascertain if there are any South Koreans in local Christian groups.

“This investigation targets Christians, aimed at ensuring that foreign missionaries do not influence religious groups,” an official from one of the villages revealed to Bitter Winter. “We have to report the results of our investigation to the police station every day.”

Village officials have received special forms to fill them in with information about the detected cases of “foreign Christian infiltration” and how they have been handled.

On Sept. 18, three police officers stormed into a church in Jilin’s Meihekou city that was built with donations from South Koreans. They questioned members of the congregation one by one, asking if there were any South Koreans in their church.
