Keith Getty Calls Coronavirus an ‘Opportunity’ to ‘Reorder’ Homes for Christ

Christian families who are shut-in during the COVID-19 pandemic have a unique opportunity to reorder their homes for the good of Christ, says songwriter Keith Getty.

Getty and his wife Kristyn hosted a “Getty Family Hymn Sing” on Facebook Live Tuesday night, singing modern and traditional hymns alongside their oldest daughters. The Family Hymn Sing is held Tuesday nights around 7:15 Central.

Many families, Getty noted, are shut inside their homes during the pandemic. The Gettys live in Nashville Tenn., which along with surrounding areas is under a stay-at-home order.

He and his wife are modern hymn writers.

“In the next three months – [or] three months-plus – we have such an incredible opportunity to reorder how … our homes are and [to] share our faith with friends – a chance we’ll probably never have again,” Getty said during the Facebook Live session. “This year provides a unique space for all of us.

Getty said he was interviewed this week and was asked if he was “out of business now that churches have stopped singing.” Getty quoted Jesus’ promise in Matthew 18:20: “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

“The promise is where two or three are gathered – so it’s for our homes, and for our churches,” Getty said, emphasizing the need for worship at home.

Getty was the co-writer of In Christ Alone, one of the more popular modern hymns.

The Gettys and their children Tuesday night sang several songs, including traditional tunes All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name and It Is Well With My Soul, and their modern hymns His Mercy Is More and Christ Our Hope in Life and Death.

While we’re not in church, we can really focus on helping our families and our churches sing and filling our homes with songs in the Lord … so that when we go back into churches, it will be even better,” Getty said.
