African Country of Malawi to Open Embassy in Jerusalem

The Republic of Malawi, a landlocked country in southeastern Africa, is planning to open a new embassy in Jerusalem, CBN News reports.

Malawi Foreign Minister Eisenhower Mkaka made the announcement Tuesday while visiting Israel, signaling the country intends to open up a “fully-fledged embassy in Jerusalem.”

Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement about the embassy, offered high hopes of sharing key resources with the country, especially in the areas of cybersecurity, agriculture, health, and “every area” that “lends itself to cooperation.”

The initial meeting happened in Jerusalem during Mkaka’s first visit, when he noted that he plans to open up a diplomatic office in August until the full-fledged embassy is built.

In a joint statement with the two countries, the nation’s leaders both expressed optimism over the agreement. “This important statement testifies to the depth of relations between Israel and Malawi and will lead to their continued strengthening of the cordial relations between the two nations,” the statement said.

And Prime Minister Netanyahu also openly welcomed both the Malawi diplomat and the opportunity, stating “This is a great day because of your decision to move your embassy to Jerusalem, which is our eternal capital from the time of King David. We welcome you as a friend. We welcome Malawi as a friend. We’ve always had excellent relations and they’re going to be even better.”

Malawi, unlike many other nations in Africa, is a majority-Christian nation with an evangelical president. The President, Lazarus Chakwera, has stated the country will undergo a whole host of reforms now that he’s in office. He first took office in July.

“The reforms will also include a review of our diplomatic presence, including our resolve to have new diplomatic missions in Lagos, Nigeria and Jerusalem, Israel. I will be sharing more details about this in the near future,” Chakwera stated.
