New Dolly Parton Christmas Movie Highlights the Importance of Forgiveness

Country music star Dolly Parton’s new Netflix Christmas musical, Christmas on the Square, will teach the biblical value of forgiveness, both asking for and giving it, at a time where forgiveness may be needed more than ever.

Christmas on the Square follows a rich, curmudgeonly woman named Regina Fuller who returns to the place where she grew up after her father dies. But rather than just come for a funeral, she is really there to kick everyone out of their homes and sell the town to build a mall on the land.

Initially, Regina announces that the townspeople need to clear out of their homes by Christmas Eve or else face the consequences. However, after she spends some time in the town and reconnects with an old love interest, the movie begins to take a different direction.

According to Parton, in an interview with The Christian Post, the film has a message of restoration and forgiveness. “There’s a lot to be said about forgiveness; it cleans you for other good stuff to come in. If you go around with a bunch of hate and anger and bottled up stuff in you, you can’t blossom, as a person, you’re not doing yourself any favors or anyone else. It’s just so much better to forgive,” she said in the interview.

In the musical, Parton plays the part of an angel, and Regina Fuller will be played by Christine Baranski. The musical will be released on Netflix on November 22. The musical features 14 original songs, all written by Parton, and the musical’s title track is featured on her A Holly Dolly Christmas album. A Holly Dolly Christmas is Parton’s first Christmas album in 30 years. One of the songs will talk about the power of prayer and another will focus on love.
