California Pastor Turns 3 Chairs on The Voice, Advances to the Next Round

Pastor Jim Ranger astonished viewers when he turned three of the four judge’s chairs on The Voice with his rendition of the country song “Blue Ain’t Your Color.”

The California pastor of New Life Church blew away judges, with John Legend turning his chair and therefore putting his hat in the ring to become Ranger’s celebrity mentor for the duration of the show within 20 seconds of Ranger’s singing. The only judge who didn’t turn their chair was Kelly Clarkson, though following the performance she admitted that she “should have turned.”

“Feel free to make them fight like hell for you,” she told Ranger. John Legend immediately responded asserting, “Oh we’re gonna fight!”

Talking to the judges, Ranger noted that he grew up in Bakersfield in the 90s. One of the other hosts, pop music star Gwen Stefani, stated that Bakersfield is where she had many of her greatest concerts.

Stefani went on to share with Ranger all of the things she loved about his performance. “You know what I love about you? You’re so confident. Like, the music is so in you so deep that you just have to let it out,” she said. Stefani noted that she “had to” press her button because of his singing and showmanship.

Meanwhile, Legend, the hit writer and singer of the song “All of Me,” shared that he liked Ranger’s vocal tone. “I heard so much in your tone and by the time you started wailing at the end, it was such a revelation,” the internationally-recognized singer and producer said of Ranger’s performance. “I think you’re so soulful, such a great musician, and a great vocalist and I would absolutely love to work with you,” he asserted.

Ultimately, Ranger went with country music star and producer, Blake Shelton, even though Shelton didn’t really say much other than that he agreed with Legend and “loved the feel” of Ranger’s performance. Ranger shared that he had already decided that he would choose Shelton if given the chance.

After the performance, Ranger expressed gratitude on Instagram, stating, “I can’t express how humbled I am by the love and support that has been flooding in … You have captured my heart and you will always be apart [sic] of the #TheRangerFam.” He has now advanced to the 4-way knockout round.
