Ramming attack foiled by Border Police at checkpoint near Jerusalem

A ramming attack was attempted on Wednesday afternoon at the az-Za’ayyem checkpoint near Jerusalem. The attacker died a couple of hours later after failed resuscitation efforts at Hadassah-University Medical Center.According to an initial investigation, the suspect, a resident of east Jerusalem, approached the checkpoint and presented false documents reportedly belonging to someone else. During the routine security check, the suspect suddenly started driving while hitting a Border Police officer on the scene. Border Police officers opened fire at the suspect, who was severely injured and evacuated to Hadassah-University Medical Center in Jerusalem for medical treatment. The injured Border Police officer was evacuated, too, having been lightly injured.Several other attempted terror attacks have been foiled in recent weeks in the West Bank and near Jerusalem.On Sunday, IDF soldiers foiled an attempted attack against troops near Ramallah. The suspects placed hidden explosive devices near a military station. Earlier this month, the IDF foiled an attempted shooting attack near Nablus. In October, two Palestinian minors were arrested by the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) after being recruited by Hamas and planning to carry out attacks and kidnappings in the West Bank.
