Trump Announces Morocco as 4th Arab State to Normalize Relations with Israel
Israel and Morocco have agreed to normalize relations, President Trump announced Thursday, Faithwire reports.
This marks the fourth country to normalize relations with Israel during President Trump’s administration. The White House stated Morocco would “resume diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel and expand economic and cultural cooperation to advance regional stability.” Additionally, the White House stated they would recognize Morocco’s claim of sovereignty over Western Sahara, a territory that has been under such intense ownership debates that international negotiators have been unable to rectify the problem for years.
“The president reaffirmed his support for Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute over the Western Sahara territory and as such the president recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the entire Western Sahara territory,” the White House said.
The peace deals began after the Trump Administration was successful in helping Israel and the United Arab Emirates come together and agree to work toward a peace agreement.
Following the United Arab Emirates, several other countries followed suit and signed peace deals or agreed to peace talks with Israel. This prompted Norwegian Parliament Member Christian Tybring-Gjedde to nominate President Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize.
President Trump has been a strong ally with Israel, siding with them on the West Bank territory, which the United Nations says is Palestinian territory, despite the overwhelming majority of businesses being Israeli-owned and there being an Israeli-majority population. Additionally, in 2017, President Trump affirmed Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and set up an embassy there, although the project was postponed though not scrapped entirely.
