Trump Says He May Run for President Again in 2024 if Election Results Stand
If his legal battles in the courts fail, President Trump, who has not yet conceded the 2020 election, said he may consider running for president again in 2024.
According to CBN News, Trump made the comment during a Christmas party at the White House earlier this month.
“It’s been an amazing four years,” Trump said at the event. “We are trying to do another four years. Otherwise, I’ll see you in four years.”
While many of Trump’s supporters would love to see the president run again, it may hinder future GOP candidates from stepping up.
“He controls the loyalty of a large portion of the electorate,” Republican strategist Tom Rath explained. “He obviously has the ability to finance a race.”
CBN News Chief Analyst David Brody added that Trump “sucks the energy out of the room for every other candidate who’s thinking about running,” including Vice President Mike Pence and Nikki Haley.
“Tom Cotton was thinking about getting in, the governor of South Dakota, and there’s a whole long list,” he added.
GOP hopefuls may also fear turning away Trump’s large following, who are presently upset, as they believe that the election was rigged against Trump.
Rath, however, contended that there is a desire within the Republican party to see other members run for President
He said, “I think there’s built-up energy in the Republican Party to move generationally. But also, ideologically.”
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party may not take Trump’s future bid seriously until he actually starts running.
“I think Democrats are going to see Donald Trump running in 2024 as a sideshow, I really do,” Brody noted. “I think they are not going to pay much attention to it until they have to and that could be in 2024.”
If Trump runs and wins in 2024, he would become the second president to win for a non-consecutive term after Grover Cleveland, who served as the 22nd and 24th President of the United States.
