Congress To Vote On $900 Billion Coronavirus Relief Package
Congress is slated to vote on a new 900 billion dollar relief package, The Associated Press reports.
After months of debate, Congress came to an agreement on a COVID-19 stimulus bill this Sunday.
“Moments ago, the four leaders of the Senate and the House finalized an agreement. It will be another major rescue package for the American people,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky) said on the Senate floor Sunday afternoon, USA Today reports.
The relief package, which was released in bill form Monday afternoon, will include a $600 stimulus check to every American and also a temporary $300-a-week unemployment program to qualifying Americans.
Congress is set to vote on the 5,593-page bill on Monday. Provided the legislation passes, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Monday morning on CNBC that Americans can expect to begin receiving direct payments next week.
The relief package has an additional $280 billion set aside for small businesses in forgivable loans, extending the Paycheck Protection Program.
Reportedly, the relief package will also extend eviction moratorium and provide $25 billion for direct rental assistance.
Additional funds will go towards the procurement and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines ($30 billion), schools ($82 billion) and live event venues ($15 billion). Further, $1.4 trillion will go toward funding the government through Sept. 30.
Additional funds will also reportedly be going toward clean energy initiatives, broadband internet ($7 billion) and the airline industry ($14 billion).
Other relief efforts included in the bill are a tax credit for paid sick leave and an end to surprise medical billing.
