Senate Receives Trump Impeachment Articles from House Democrats

On Monday, House Democrats delivered the articles of impeachment against former president Donald Trump to the U.S Senate in order to begin the impeachment trial, CBN News reports.

After his arrival in the Senate Rep. Jamie Raskin, lead House impeachment manager, contended that Trump “engaged in high crimes and misdemeanors by inciting violence against the government of the United States.”

The trial is expected to be carried out by nine impeachment managers who will serve as prosecutors. They had previously charged Trump with “incitement of insurrection” for the violent attack at the U.S Capitol on Jan. 6 that left five people dead.

Two weeks ago, 10 Republicans along with all 222 House Democrats voted to impeach Trump, making him the first U.S President in history to be impeached twice.

The Senate, however, will need 17 Republicans to convict Trump alongside all 50 Democrats. According to a CNN report, President Joe Biden said on Monday that he does not believe that there will not be enough votes to convict his predecessor.

While some Republicans condemned Trump’s rhetoric prior to the attack at the nation’s Capital, a majority of them have yet to take an official stance on the impeachment. Other Republicans, however, have called the impeachment into question as there is no legal precedent in impeaching a former president.

If convicted, Trump would be unable to run for office again in the future. The Senate trial is currently scheduled to take place on Feb. 9.

According to CBN News, Justice Department’s Inspector General Michael Horowitz has reportedly launched a new investigation as to whether DOJ officials loyal to Trump took efforts in overturning the 2020 election into consideration.

Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer had urged Horowitz to launch the investigation as he accused Trump’s DOJ officials of “attempted sedition.”
