Women Are Reportedly Being Raped, Tortured in China’s ‘Re-Education’ Camps

Women who have been thrown into the Chinese Communist Party’s internment camps have reportedly been raped and tortured by officials, the BBC reports.

Their source of information comes from someone who says she was repeatedly raped in multiple internment camps in China. She said the officials always wore masks and would drag her off into a “black room” where there would be no surveillance cameras. “Perhaps this is the most unforgettable scar on me forever,” the woman told the BBC. “I don’t even want these words to spill from my mouth.”

The BBC reports there are at least 1 million men and women who are being detained in these internment camps. Further, multiple human rights organizations have reported on “an oppressive system of mass surveillance, detention, indoctrination, and even forced sterilisation,” at these camps. The BBC’s source also asserted that there is an organized “system of mass rape, sexual abuse, and torture.”

The outlet further quotes their anonymous witness as noting that women were removed from their cells “every night” to be raped by these masked men. She, herself, was raped three times by groups of two or three men. The witness spoke to media outlets before, but from Kazakhstan, where she revealed she “lived in constant fear of being sent back to China” and placed under even worse punishment. The witness reportedly fled from China after she was released.

According to the BBC, China has openly admitted that these camps exist, but the government insists they are for the “re-education” of minorities, including the Uighurs.

The witness’ testimony is partly corroborated by documents in the region of Kunes county obtained by the BBC that call for “‘transformation through education’ of ‘key groups’ – a common euphemism in China for the indoctrination of the Uighurs.

In one Kunes document, the ‘education’ process is described as ‘washing brains, cleansing hearts, strengthening righteousness and eliminating evil.'” Further, another Kazakh woman was interviewed by the BBC who provided a similar testimony.

The Kazakh woman stated, “My job was to remove their clothes above the waist and handcuff them so they cannot move. Then I would leave the women in the room and a man would enter – some Chinese man from outside or policeman. I sat silently next to the door, and when the man left the room I took the woman for a shower.”

So far, multiple countries, including the United States, have called on China to stop the use of internment camps. However, China has shown no signs of letting up. “Their goal is to destroy everyone,” she said. “And everybody knows it.”
