Representative Ron Wright Dies of Lung Cancer and Coronavirus

On Monday, Rep. Ron Wright (R-TX), who had been battling lung cancer for months since his reelection, became the first Congressmember to die of Coronavirus. He was 67.

On January 21, 2021, Wright released a statement saying he tested positive for Coronavirus and that he had been quarantining. He also said he was experiencing minor symptoms. “I am experiencing minor symptoms, but overall, I feel okay and will continue working for the people of the 6th District from home this week.”

According to The Dallas Morning News, Wright and his wife were admitted to Baylor University Medical Center with Coronavirus side effects at the end of January.

Wrights’ final vote as an elected official was against the impeachment of former President Trump, who is no longer in office but is currently being tried in the Senate for “Incitement of insurrection”.

Wright joined most of his Republican colleagues in the decision, though 10 Republicans, none from Texas, did vote to impeach Trump.

According to a statement from Wright’s office obtained by The Dallas Morning News, “Congressman Wright will be remembered as a constitutional conservative. He was a statesman, not an ideologue. Ron and Susan dedicated their lives to fighting for individual freedom, Texas values, and above all, the lives of the unborn. As friends, family, and many of his constituents will know, Ron maintained his quick wit and optimism until the very end. Despite years of painful, sometimes debilitating treatment for cancer, Ron never lacked the desire to get up and go to work, to motivate those around him, or to offer fatherly advice.”

According to his official website, Rep. Wright has received numerous awards for his civil leadership, including Volunteer of the Year, Man of the Year for Community Service, Hero of the Homeless, and others. He and his wife have three children and nine grandchildren and two Labrador Retrievers.
